The literary quarterly "FA-art"

Our editors and freelance staff: Presently our editorial staff consists of: Konrad Cezary Kęder (Chief editor, born 1965), Krzysztof Uniłowski (born 1967), and Dariusz Nowacki (born 1965). They are all graduates of the University of Silesia. K. Uniłowski is still closely connected with this University, as a scientist in the Department of Literary Criticism.
In the powerful group of our freelance staff there are also persons connecting their activity as literary critics with the didactic work at the University of Silesia, Anna Węgrzyniakowa, Józef Olejniczak, Stefan Szymutko, Adam Dziadek among others, as well as a group of translators, who are also mostly employees of this University, and who have presented young literatures of Central and Eastern European Countries in our magazine. These are: Urszula Kowalska - Slovenian literature, Krystyna Pieniążek - Croatian literature, Lucyna Spyrka - Slovak literature,
Anna Majkiewicz - literature in German, Wiesława Rusin - Hungarian literature, Dariusz Tkaczewski - Czech literature. We are also proud of our cooperation with the renowned Polish literary critic Karol Maliszewski, as well as young authors Michał Derda and Grzegorz Olszański.
Katarzyna Bochenek is the artist responsible for the graphical side of our magazine.

Our character: "FA-art" is considered a magazine with a very precise programme. It is the only literary periodical in Poland putting so much stress on the post modernist reflection in literature.
"FA-art" presents poetry and prose of mostly young artists (born in the sixties and seventies), critical essays, and about 25% of each edition is reserved for reviews. We also present anthologies of the young literature of the Central and Eastern European countries. To handle that, we often extend the number volume up to 200 pages. Such extended editions appear usually once a year. So far, they used to be devoted the young literatures of , Slovenia, Germany, Croatia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. These presentations are not profitable, that’s why the editors ask the copyright owners to allow free publishing. As illustration, we present the works of young artists, so every edition is a special catalogue of one artist. We used to print the texts of the majority of the authors from the so called thirty-year-olds group. As opposed to other Polish literary periodicals, "FA-art" puts much stress on literary criticism, and comments on changes in the Polish literature after 1989. The literary criticism published in "FA-art" is professional and open to the new methodological trends in literary analysis, but nonetheless it is written in casual, reader-friendly style. We often come back to the works of the most significant authors of the past decades, observe and comment on general cultural changes ( melting of different cultures, multi media, etc.) Through our activities we believe to deny stereotypical opinions about Upper Silesia as a region of little importance to the Polish literary life.

Our achievements: Up till now we have issued 33 editions of our quarterly. The standard volume of 102 A-4 pages was sometimes extendet to 200 pages. We have also issued several books, for instance Księga Zaklęć (The Book of Spells) by A.Tuziak, Antologia twórczości postnatalnej (Anthology of Post-Natal Works) by C.K. Kęder, a collection of poems Opowieści Niesamowite (Supernatural Stories) by W.Kuczok, a collection of critical essays Skądinąd (On the other Side) by K. Uniłowski, and a Polish translation of J. Derrida’s Positions by A.Dziadek.

Our past: The literary quarterly "FA-art" was established in 1988 by a group of students of the University of Silesia in Katowice, connected with the Silesian fraction of the pacifist movement "Wolność i pokój" ( Peace and Freedom). In the earliest period (1988-89) it was issued underground, to avoid cenzorship. In 1989 Cezary Kęder got the rights to the title and became the chief editor. From that time on, the magazine has had exclusively literary character.
Since 1991 it has appeared regularly as a quarterly. The revolutionary edition nr. 2-3 from 1993 (12-13), awoke interest of the literary circles all around Poland.Since that time, the magazine has been widely read in the whole country and has constantly been gaining popularity.
